Editor: Here we have Alexander Cozens’ "A Bay with a Ship, Coast to Right," a watercolor monotype at the Tate. It's, well, brown! A very tonal, dreamlike scene. What captures your eye most about this piece? Curator: It feels like a half-remembered dream, doesn't it? Cozens was all about evoking a mood, like a visual poem. I get a sense of vastness despite its small size, almost infinite potential. Look at how he suggests form with so few strokes. Does it make you feel a little lost, in a good way? Editor: Lost, yes, definitely! I hadn't thought of it like a poem, more like a... fading photograph. Curator: Exactly! And that's the beauty, isn't it? It's both. Art is all about seeing what you see.
