Editor: Hmm, that’s interesting… I hadn't considered it that way. Maybe she’s both, trapped physically but also mentally preoccupied. Is the landscape important here? Curator: Hugely so! Roerich uses landscape as a character itself, witness and container of human drama. The washes of fiery sunset suggest a passion or conflict that our Captive reflects in miniature. Do you see a conflict within the woman too, perhaps in her downcast eyes? Editor: I do now! The colours also give off warmth and danger at the same time.
