Carpet 1729 - 1755

This elaborate carpet was made by the Savonnerie Manufactory, a French workshop renowned for its luxurious textiles. The design is dominated by floral motifs, acanthus leaves, and heraldic symbols, all meticulously woven into a dense pattern. In this era, such symbols of nature were often used to evoke a sense of paradise. The acanthus leaf, a recurring motif in classical art and architecture, appears here as well. We find it adorning ancient Greek temples, and it reappears in Romanesque cathedrals, each time carrying connotations of endurance and rebirth.
