Curatorial notes

Charles Pierre Joseph Normand created this print of Pierre Joseph Jacques Tiberghien using etching and engraving. The print presents Tiberghien, an engraver, goldsmith and chaser, in profile, framed by a laurel wreath, clouds, and a circle of stars overhead. Normand, who lived through the French Revolution, here draws on classical motifs that were revived during the Revolution. The laurel wreath would have been understood as a symbol of the achievements of a citizen, and the stars overhead, suggestive of enlightenment ideals. As we look at this portrait, it is hard not to consider how revolutions shape identity and representation. The neoclassical style, with its clean lines and idealized forms, served as a visual language for a society aspiring to redefine itself. This portrait, then, is not just an image of a man, but a reflection of an era grappling with radical change and new possibilities.
