Gelria carved this horn into a walking stick handle, whittling and shaving the material to make a smooth, slightly shiny surface. It's intriguing to imagine Gelria holding the horn, turning it over and over, trying to figure out the perfect curve. I wonder what kind of tool they used to make this? Maybe some kind of small knife? There's a little eye in the curve, which makes it seem like a bird. Is it a beak or claw? Is it a fragment? The more I look at it, the more I think about the way that objects tell stories and hold secrets about the person who made them. Was it a found object? Did they have it commissioned? When I look at this handle, I feel connected to all the other makers who have ever worked with their hands to bring something new into the world. The conversation between makers is a continuum, and this handle is a part of that.
