Editor: This is listed as "Caricature of Professor M. Boichuk" and is believed to be by Mykhailo Boychuk, we don't know exactly when it was painted, or with what materials. I get the impression it’s rather satirical. What’s your take on it? Curator: It’s fantastically wicked, isn’t it? And ever so slightly unhinged. The image seethes with, I want to say, revolutionary fervor— the orange palette pulsates, but there’s a sort of stylized violence playing out above Boychuk himself, who looks saintly in profile. A sort of double vision… do you see it too? Editor: Absolutely, there’s this odd combination of reverence and mockery going on! The “saintly” portrayal of Boychuk below definitely clashes with the chaotic scene above. Curator: Indeed! That figure looming above... he is like some demonized reaper holding up his tools. Are they sickles? And he’s sitting on... another prostrate body? There's also this ghost hovering above! It makes you wonder, what's Boychuk being caricatured for? His ideas? His methods? Or is there something much more personal bubbling to the surface here? Editor: It's complex. The contrast between the placid Boychuk and that scene of frenzied labour—maybe forced labour—it hints at societal pressures and personal struggles clashing. I wonder if that expressionism makes it a darker caricature of productivity under duress. Curator: Beautifully put. Perhaps that's the core tension. The saint and the sinner are within all of us, no? That struggle to remain grounded when external forces threaten to twist you. That constant search for freedom when it is all taken away... Editor: It definitely provides much more than just a humorous glance; more of an introspective viewing now. Thank you. Curator: The pleasure's all mine, to get to dance with images is always such fun.
