Elin Danielson-Gambogi made this painting, Engaged, with oil on canvas and what strikes me is how the light feels so alive, almost shimmering. The surface has a kind of fuzziness, the brushstrokes broken and airy, like she's trying to capture the feeling of the wind rustling through the trees and grass. The colors are muted, mostly blues and greens, but with these pops of white in the wildflowers. I think about how she may have worked, probably en plein air, squinting into the sunlight and trying to translate what she saw onto the canvas as quickly as possible. Look closely at the way she renders the couple in the field. See how their forms almost dissolve into the background, as if they're just another part of the landscape. It reminds me a little of early Impressionism, like a more grounded, Finnish version of Monet. It’s like she’s not just painting what she sees, but how it feels to be in that place, in that moment.
