These trousers, created anonymously from black broadcloth and gold braid, were part of the official uniform of a state paymaster. The dark wool and precious metallic trim are interesting in combination. Broadcloth was a luxury fabric, densely woven for a smooth surface. Gold braid, or galoon, was made by wrapping thin strips of gold around a textile core, then woven or braided. The shimmering effect would have been impressive, catching the light with every movement. Both of these materials demanded the work of skilled artisans. The trousers speak volumes about labor and status. As a uniform, the garment signifies the paymaster’s role in the state apparatus, while the expensive materials underscore his authority. Think about the skilled labor involved in producing the broadcloth and braid, and then assembling the trousers. These are all aspects of its cultural significance, and reminds us that even clothing can carry a heavy load of meaning.
