Henricus Wilhelmus Couwenberg created this print, “Christ disputing with men in the temple,” sometime in the first half of the 19th century. The image depicts a scene from the Gospel of Luke, where the young Jesus engages in theological debate with the elders of the temple in Jerusalem. Consider how the columns and arches of the temple set the scene for the religious narrative. But also reflect on the social and political conditions that shaped its making. This print was made in the Netherlands during a period of significant religious and political change. The Dutch Reformed Church was the dominant religious institution, but there was a growing Catholic minority. Couwenberg was himself a Catholic artist. Looking at the institutional history of museums and art schools, and researching religious publications from the period, we can understand the artist's intentions, and how his work spoke to the religious and cultural debates of his time.
