I imagine Eva Hesse made this ‘Untitled’ painting with oil on canvas. It’s awash with greys, purples, and tan, but it's all kind of muted and dreamy, right? I can imagine Eva, brush in hand, maybe a little anxious but also excited, layering these colors, one over the other, trying to coax a feeling or a form out of the surface. Look at how the paint drips down in the top right corner. It gives the impression of being unfinished, like a sketch. But, let's be clear, this isn’t just some random daubing. Hesse's all about process. You can almost feel her wrestling with the material, searching for a way to express something ineffable. Hesse was a sculptor, right? But here, with paint, she’s still pushing the boundaries of what a picture can be, just like she did with fiberglass and resin. Painters and sculptors, we're all just talking to each other across time, trying to figure out what it means to be human. Isn't that cool?
