This anonymous 1901 print, Interieur met een lezende vrouw bij een olielamp en een vrouw achter een piano, is etched on paper. At its heart, we find a table illuminated by an oil lamp; a woman sits reading, while in the background, another plays the piano. Consider the lamp: it’s more than mere illumination. Light, since antiquity, has symbolized knowledge, enlightenment, and the dispelling of darkness. We see this motif echoed across cultures, from the menorah in Jewish tradition to the Enlightenment's emphasis on reason as a guiding light. Here, it focuses the scene, much as Caravaggio's use of light guides our gaze to the spiritual core of his subjects. Yet, what of the shadows it casts? Jung might argue that they represent the subconscious, the unexplored aspects of our psyche. In the endless dance between light and shadow, we find not just a visual contrast but a symbolic journey— a cyclical return of symbols.
