Editor: We are looking at "Riviernimf Styx" or "River nymph Styx," an engraving by Philips Galle from 1587. It depicts a nude female figure next to a body of water, and she seems to be emerging from a rather large seashell. I'm immediately struck by how imposing and almost masculine she appears, despite being a nymph. What can you tell me about this piece? Curator: It is interesting that you noticed the figure's muscularity. Consider the political climate of the late 16th century, especially within the Habsburg Netherlands, where Galle worked. The "nymph" Styx is not merely a decorative female nude. Here, the allegorical nude embodies power, and perhaps more specifically, dominion. Consider that Styx is a deity related to one of the rivers of the Underworld and a key figure in oaths and boundaries. This connects to the period's emphasis on authority and the control over geographical space, reflecting the intense socio-political struggles playing out in that historical period. Does this reading resonate with your initial reaction? Editor: It does. Knowing the history behind the work provides a new way of seeing its meaning. I would not have associated her figure with political struggle, otherwise. Curator: Furthermore, notice how Galle's use of engraving amplifies the texture of the scene. The calculated arrangement of lines, the hatching, contributes to the overall somber, assertive mood of the image, drawing the viewer into the realm of both myth and political reality. What is more prominent, her sexuality or power? Editor: Definitely her power. The knowledge of the historic setting reshapes one's reception of this work of art. I now interpret Styx’s figure as more commanding and her nudity, perhaps, as more of an allusion to some ancient authority than some titillating display. Thank you. Curator: Indeed. Examining art through a historical and cultural lens opens us to complex interpretations, and I appreciate you considering those nuances with me today.
