This is a woodcut, likely crafted around 1500 by Jorg Glockendon. It depicts Saint Christopher carrying the Christ Child and Saint John the Baptist. Note how Saint John presents the Agnus Dei, the Lamb of God, an ancient symbol of Christ's sacrifice. This motif has roots stretching back to pagan sacrificial rites, where the lamb appeased the gods. In Christian iconography, it signifies redemption, but its primal echo stirs deep within the viewer. Consider also Saint Christopher, the giant carrying the savior across the river. The river itself is a boundary, a perilous crossing from one state to another. This crossing mirrors similar motifs in ancient Greek myths, where figures like Hermes guide souls across the river Styx. These symbols are not static; they evolve. The emotional weight they carry resonates through centuries, shaping our collective memory and subconscious understanding.
