Jacob Ernst Marcus made this drawing of a seated man and young woman, on paper, sometime before 1826. The drawing’s material, humble as it is, has a real impact on the image. The thin strokes of graphite create a delicate atmosphere. It feels very immediate, a fleeting impression of a scene. Look closely, and you see how much work has gone into the composition. The controlled application of lines, rubbed and layered to build up tone and texture. Marcus’s technique wasn't novel, but part of an established academic tradition. Drawing was, and still is, a fundamental skill for any artist to learn, a basis for all other work. It wasn't just about representing what you see, but about careful observation, and building visual knowledge. In his attention to detail, Marcus elevated a common scene into an image of enduring appeal.
