Curator: John Baptist Malchair, born in 1731, created "A Castellated Mill on a Waterfall, after Sir G. Beaumont," a work currently held in the Tate Collections. Editor: It strikes me as something out of a dream; that dramatic waterfall tumbling down, almost consuming everything in its path. Curator: The monochrome palette really emphasizes the texture—you can almost feel the spray of the water and the rough stone of the mill. The artist really uses light and shadow. Editor: It feels...romantic, doesn't it? In that stormy, Byronic sort of way. Makes you want to brood on a hilltop, or maybe just curl up with a good book. Curator: Perhaps. It is a copy of a work by Beaumont, so we see Malchair engaging in a dialogue with his contemporary. Editor: Ah, well, even copies can have their own spirit, don’t you think? Still, what a place to grind your grain. Curator: Indeed. A potent intersection of industry and nature's raw power.
