Olga Boznanska made this painting of her studio in Krakow with oil on canvas, and you can really feel the artist feeling her way through the space with a brush. The paint is applied in layers that give it a kind of depth. Look how the window blends with the garden outside, and notice the way she’s built up the surface of the painting in small, deliberate strokes. It’s like she's trying to capture not just what her studio looks like, but how it feels to be in there, surrounded by all her stuff. Take a look at the flowers on the right. The texture is so thick that you can almost feel the weight of the paint, but the strokes are also really delicate. It’s a messy, beautiful record of the painting process, and it reminds me a bit of Vuillard, who also transformed everyday life through a very personal lens.
