This medal was made in 1800 by Johan George Holtzhey to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of Jan Adriaan van Eyk's factory. The medal presents a symmetrical composition, divided into two distinct sides, each making use of carefully arranged text and imagery. On one side, we observe the structured arrangement of symbolic elements such as trees and barrels, which are vertically ordered. These elements frame the inscription of Jan Adriaan van Eyk's name. This ordering of space and symbols invites us to consider how meaning is constructed. The other side of the medal is dominated by neatly aligned text, a radiant sun and a laurel wreath which encircles a monogram. These elements, while distinct, work together to create a unified visual statement. The medal does more than just celebrate an anniversary; it invites reflection on the relationship between art, industry, and cultural memory.
