This set of four saucers, created by English silversmith John Ruslen between 1693 and 1694, showcases the intricate craftsmanship of the late 17th century. The saucers, measuring 4 1/2 inches in diameter, feature an elaborate design that is characteristic of the Baroque era. The center of each saucer depicts a seated figure, surrounded by a circular motif of fantastical creatures, birds, and stylized plants. These decorative elements, known as chinoiserie, were popular during this period, reflecting an interest in Asian art and culture. Currently held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, these saucers are an example of the skilled artistry and decorative trends of the late 17th-century English silver industry.
