Here is a painting by Carlos Sablòn called Souffle de vie, made with I'm guessing oil paint. It's a whimsical world, isn't it? I imagine Sablòn in his studio, building up the layers, a push and pull between intention and accident. A solitary tree stands tall, its branches reaching towards a sky that morphs into a cloud. A cloud-tree, maybe. And those fish at the base, like supplicants at an altar. Are they whispering secrets to the roots? There's a tenderness in the way the colors blend, a dreamlike quality that reminds me of early surrealism. The texture must be smooth, inviting touch. I can almost feel the slight give of the paint under my fingers. It's like Sablòn is inviting us into his own personal mythology.
