Carlos Sablòn made this untitled oil painting, sometime after he was born in 1981, and there is something so striking about the artist's approach. It feels like a dream and the execution looks like someone really enjoying the process of applying paint to canvas. Look closely and you will see how the texture and color create a surreal landscape. The smooth sky contrasts with the rough bark of the tree. And the fish! Are they salmon? Are they looking to climb the tree? What do they want? This contrast invites us to dive into a world where the boundary between reality and imagination blurs. Take a look at the branches, they are like an explosion, a release of energy, and remind me of the work of Philip Guston, another painter who didn’t believe in boundaries, in life or art. The beauty of art lies in its ambiguity. What does it mean? Maybe it’s up to us to decide.
