This is Pieter van Gunst's "Portret van Kaspar Brandt", an engraving made sometime between 1698 and 1724, and now housed in the Rijksmuseum. The work is dominated by the sitter's face, framed by a finely inscribed oval. This circular boundary contains Brandt's name and biographical details, which immediately gives the image a sense of enclosure. The subject's direct gaze and the sharp lines of the engraving create a striking immediacy. The subtle tonal gradations achieved through intricate cross-hatching define Brandt's features, lending depth and volume to the image. We might consider the semiotics of portraiture at this time, where images were less about capturing likeness and more about conveying social status and moral character through symbols. Note the contrast between the detailed face and the relatively plain attire, a possible signifier of the sitter’s profession as a Remonstrant preacher. This functions not just aesthetically but also as part of a larger cultural and philosophical discourse.
