This plate with Hercules and Omphale was made by Sforza di Marcantonio. The plate presents a classical scene dominated by dynamic and theatrical gestures of the figures set against a brightly coloured landscape. The composition divides into two distinct halves, each side mirroring the other through color and form, though not in content. On the left, we see Omphale attended by cherubs, while on the right stands Hercules himself, albeit feminized and removed from his usual heroic context. The artist deliberately plays with contrasting textures and tones. The rocky landscape with yellow hues sharply contrasts with the soft, flowing forms of the figures draped in classical robes. This plate destabilizes traditional gender roles and power dynamics, inviting us to question the boundaries between masculinity and femininity, strength and servitude. The surface's circular form further emphasizes the cyclical nature of such inversions, reminding us that meaning in art is ever-evolving.
