Editor: This is an X-radiograph of what is thought to be Giovanni Bellini’s "Borso d’Este (?)," housed at the Harvard Art Museums. The image itself is haunting. What can you tell me about this process? Curator: It reveals the painting’s material history – the layers of paint, the artist's hand, and perhaps even later interventions. How does examining these layers alter our understanding of Bellini's process and the original artwork's meaning? Editor: It makes me think about how much labor is unseen. Curator: Precisely. The hidden labor of creation, the materials sourced, and the very act of radiography – it all shifts the focus from the finished product to the means of its production and analysis. Editor: I never thought about it this way, really gives a different perspective.
