Angel Planells made this strange dreamscape, Pintura surrealista, with paint, probably oil on canvas. Look at this weird scene… a woman stands in water on what might be a tree stump. Over here, a man stands on a floating rock pointing to something out of view, next to a giant shell hovering in the sky. What could Planells have been thinking? Maybe something about the theater of life, a stage set for the absurd. I can imagine him carefully layering the paint, building up these strange forms with precision and care. There’s something theatrical about his practice; he’s constructing a vision that feels both real and totally fabricated. I see echoes of de Chirico in the stark light and the feeling of alienation. Artists like Planells remind us that painting is a way of conjuring up the impossible. It’s a world where anything can happen, and that's the beauty of it.
