This etching by Kees Stoop captures a woodland, made with delicate lines on paper. Look how Stoop uses crosshatching to build up the density of the trees. It’s all about layering and process. I find the texture really interesting here. The scratchy lines give the impression of bark and tangled branches. See how the light filters through the canopy? It’s almost like a visual whisper. The marks aren’t trying to be precise, but rather to give you a feeling. Take the lower left corner, for example: those dense, dark lines – they almost vibrate with energy! "Bos" reminds me of some of the landscape drawings by Mondrian, that same interest in the raw, linear structure of the natural world. But Stoop's piece has a kind of quiet intensity. It's more about suggestion than statement, leaving room for your imagination to wander in the woods.
