Holy Wisdom 1600

This panel painting of Holy Wisdom was created by Orthodox icon painters sometime after the 4th century. These painters used tempera, applying pigments mixed with egg yolk to a wooden panel. The complex symbolism of the icon is deeply rooted in the Byzantine theological and philosophical traditions. We see Christ at the top, surrounded by angels, with Holy Wisdom in the center enthroned as an angel, flanked by the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist.
