Carle Vernet created this print, "Vrouw met kind op een ezel", using etching, and it now resides in the Rijksmuseum. Vernet lived through the French Revolution, the rise and fall of Napoleon, and the Bourbon Restoration; a period marked by drastic social and political upheaval. This work prompts us to consider the narratives and lived experiences of women and children in 18th-century France. The image of a woman, presumably a mother, with her child on a donkey evokes themes of journey, labor, and perhaps even displacement. It serves as a poignant reminder of the everyday lives of those who often remain unseen in grand historical narratives. What does it mean to witness a mother and child in such a vulnerable position? It challenges the traditional representations of women and motherhood in art, offering a glimpse into the realities of ordinary lives. It invites us to reflect on the complex interplay between personal experiences and broader social forces during a transformative era in European history.
