Curatorial notes
Dirk Jurriaan Sluyter created this print called 'Paarden in het wed' - Horses in the Wading Pool - using etching. Though undated, the work reflects the 19th-century Dutch interest in landscape and rural life. Here we see a group of riders crossing a body of water, their figures rendered with meticulous detail against a vast, open sky. The figures are interesting: we see the backs of working-class figures on horses. We can consider how this etching captures the experience of rural life in the Netherlands, and how class, gender, and species intersect to shape labor and identity in this context. How do traditional representations of labor shape our understanding of rural life, and who gets to tell these stories? Sluyter’s etching invites us to reflect on the human-animal relationship, and the ways in which it influences our perceptions of work, gender, and community. It offers a snapshot of a moment in time that continues to resonate with questions of identity, labor, and belonging.
