This fox mask with a moveable jaw was made by Tenka Kazutomo from wood, somewhere in Japan. Looking at the mask, one cannot help but wonder at the skill involved in carving such a small object with so much detail. The carver has really understood how to work with the grain of the wood to create the different textures and effects. The fox's teeth are particularly well-carved. You can see the time and care that has gone into making each one. Think about the material itself: wood is a natural, renewable resource, but it takes time to grow. When you look at an object like this, consider the environmental and social impact of its creation. This kind of netsuke is traditionally considered a craft object, rather than fine art, but I think it deserves to be appreciated as a work of art in its own right.
