Editor: Right now we’re looking at “Passage from Tao Qian’s ‘Returning Home,’” made with ink and watercolor on paper by Dong Qichang, sometime between 1555 and 1636. It feels incredibly intimate. I wonder how closely one is meant to observe it, what kind of perspective are we invited to assume, given the written nature? What do you see in this piece, beyond just calligraphy? Curator: Oh, beyond calligraphy? I see a dance between control and release. The artist clearly masters the brushstroke, but look how the ink bleeds, how the characters vary in size, suggesting a spirit at play! Don't you feel like you’re eavesdropping on a private meditation, catching glimpses into the artist’s very soul? What lines or aspects resonate with you the most? Editor: The lines at the very end are incredibly striking - or maybe because I can kind of parse them out a bit more clearly. They seem to stand out with the adjacent blank spaces! Curator: Exactly! Those bolder strokes might capture a moment of poignant clarity amidst the flow, creating that pause of perfect stillness right before a bird takes flight! They almost vibrate off the page. Do you imagine this piece was conceived quickly, intuitively, or through more calculated considerations? Editor: Hmmm… While the work shows incredible skill, I get the feeling it was done pretty spontaneously, capturing a fleeting moment. I guess it makes the name that much more resonant - like going back to one's original state, in Taoism? Curator: Precisely! The calligraphy style itself hints at this very return. By mirroring classical forms, it’s literally *revisiting* and reclaiming tradition, while that ink wash is letting the emotion spill forth, free and unburdened. Editor: That’s a gorgeous thought – reclaiming tradition but not being constrained by it. Curator: Indeed. A fitting interpretation, since the dialogue of tradition versus individual expression is still ongoing! What a journey it’s been – thanks for being here with me.
