Ursula Schulz-Dornburg made this untitled photograph using light, time and chemistry. I love the quiet simplicity of its composition. It looks like a place that time forgot - a settlement right on the water's edge, made from the materials all around it. The reflections in the water make me think about the ephemeral nature of existence, where everything’s in flux. How the water mirrors the dwellings, blurring the line between the real and the reflected. Schulz-Dornburg is known for her interest in liminal spaces, those in-between places that are often overlooked. What was she thinking when she made this? I imagine she was drawn to the resilience and resourcefulness of the people who live in such a place, so close to the elements, so dependent on their immediate surroundings. Photographers are in conversation too. We should always look at what has come before!
