This copper brooch, made with a green paste cabochon, is like a tiny painting made to be worn. The artist, Conrad Fehn, clearly enjoyed getting down to the nitty gritty, coaxing the metal into this elegant, leaf-like shape. I'm drawn to the way the light catches the copper. It’s not a smooth, even surface; instead, there are these subtle gradations and irregularities that give it so much character. The green stone in the center is like a little world unto itself. The texture is sort of pitted and bubbly, which creates this feeling of depth and complexity. The artist's process is clearly visible, which for me adds to the charm of the piece. Looking at this brooch reminds me of the work of Art Smith, another artist and jeweler who wasn't afraid to let the materials speak for themselves. This little brooch is a testament to the power of embracing imperfections and finding beauty in the unexpected.
