James Ensor made this pastel drawing of a house in Oostende. The marks look like the kind of scribbly ones that I like to make! The texture is thick with these tiny chalky lines layered to make this image of the house, but the colour palette is odd with this brown and blue which makes it feel very still. If you look closely at the bottom right corner of the image, you will notice the artist's signature which is written in thick layers of pastel, almost obscuring the lines beneath. I think that this relates to his wider work, as Ensor was an artist who embraced uncertainty over fixed meanings. He was definitely talking to other artists such as Munch.
