Daniel Hopfer created this engraving, “The Holy Family in a Room”, sometime in the early 16th century. Hopfer was a German artist, working at a time when religious imagery still dominated the cultural landscape. But engravings like this one were more accessible to ordinary people than paintings or sculptures in churches. Here, he presents the Virgin Mary, Saint Anne, and the infant Jesus within an ornate interior, with the Holy Spirit looking down on them. The setting is interesting. It’s not a humble stable, but rather an idealized domestic space, an enclosed courtyard, with other figures looking on from behind barred windows. We can see that Hopfer made some attempt to convey the textures of different materials. Perhaps he wished to comment on the relationship between the sacred and the everyday. In order to better understand the social and cultural forces that shaped Hopfer’s artistic production, we might look at the print market in Augsburg at this time, and the place of religious imagery within it. We could also research the buildings which may have inspired the artwork. Art is always rooted in a specific time and place, and the job of the historian is to uncover those connections.
