Hugo Henneberg made this photogravure, Pomeranian Motif, sometime around the turn of the century. What strikes me is how the whole scene seems to have been dipped in sepia ink, giving it a dreamy, almost melancholic feel. It’s as though Henneberg isn't just recording a landscape, but evoking a memory, a feeling. Look closely, and you’ll notice the texture. The photogravure process gives the image a soft, almost velvety surface. It's not about sharp details; it's about atmosphere and mood. See how the light catches the leaves of the birch tree? It's almost as if he’s painting with light, creating depth and dimension with subtle gradations of tone. That lone tree in the foreground is like a character in a play, its branches reaching up, connecting earth and sky. It reminds me a bit of Corot, who also knew how to find the poetry in a simple landscape. It's a reminder that art is an ongoing conversation, each artist building on the work of those who came before.
