Zhang Yu painted Spring Clouds at the Pine Studio in the 14th century, using ink and color on paper. Rather than bold colors and lines, what we see here are delicate gradations. These effects could only be achieved through remarkable control of the brush. The ink seems to float across the surface of the paper, in soft washes. The artist also applied the ink in short, stippled strokes – a technique called “hemp fiber” texture strokes. These small marks are evocative of the surfaces found in nature, like the bark of a tree. Landscape painting in China has long been associated with the literati, scholars who valued painting, poetry, and calligraphy as essential skills. The production of these works can also be seen as a highly refined craft practice. The artist had to be adept in the mixing of ink, preparing the paper, and handling a brush with skill. Considering the great care and labor involved really changes how we see this piece. It’s not just a pretty scene, but the result of intense material knowledge, and a refined understanding of the natural world.
