George Seideneck created this watercolor and graphite rendering of a baptismal font with a top. Its form is immediately striking, an amalgamation of geometric shapes softened by a gentle, almost ethereal light. The font rises from a square base, transitioning through a concave curve to a cylindrical bowl, capped with an IHS inscribed lid and cross. Seideneck's delicate use of watercolor creates a palpable sense of volume, while the graphite lines define the edges and capture the texture of the stone. The composition reflects a formal exploration of shape and symmetry, a concern with how these elements convey a sense of reverence. The semiotic weight of the cross and the IHS inscription – a Christogram – adds a layer of meaning. It prompts reflection on how art can engage with themes of faith and tradition. The font becomes a site of contemplation. Seideneck challenges us to consider how form and symbol interact.
