Carel Nicolaas Storm van 's-Gravesande created "Linden-allee, weg naar de Bresserberg te Kleve" using graphite. The drawing is defined by its stark contrast and simple composition. At the bottom of the drawing is a path leading to trees, the horizon is created by the line of the tree tops and above this is the sky. The dense, textured strokes of the graphite create a sense of depth and movement within the landscape. The artist’s use of line here, combined with shading, creates the structure of the artwork and a sense of perspective. The marks function almost like words to imply form, volume, and depth to the image and capture the subtle qualities of light and shadow. The varying densities of graphite create a scene that is not just seen but felt. What do you think about how the artist has used this visual language to evoke a scene?
