Editor: Here we have Theodore Roussel’s “Omlijsting met blad- en schelpvormige motieven,” a print from around 1897 to 1899. It's quite a muted piece, but there's something incredibly satisfying about the geometric layout and repeated motifs, wouldn't you say? What grabs your attention the most in this work? Curator: You know, it’s funny, I'm immediately transported back to a time when the everyday was being infused with art, that yearning for beauty, that art nouveau tried to capture... like a frame yearning to be more than just a frame. It's so Roussel isn’t it? Intimate, playful. Editor: Playful? I hadn’t quite seen it that way. Curator: Absolutely! The rigid geometry almost wants to break free with those little leaf flourishes in each corner, doesn't it? Makes me think, what kind of image *should* be within the middle of this frame? Editor: I guess it does create anticipation for something more. It’s clever how the repetitive designs almost hypnotize you. Curator: And you know, with art nouveau, it’s all about the line, isn’t it? How it flows, guides the eye. And this isn't just any old line; it’s a journey through stylized nature, an escape hatch into a world of possibility. Is it purely decorative, or is Roussel slyly commenting on our own human desire for, let's say, ornamentation versus genuine feeling? Editor: Wow, that's a completely different take. So it's not just about the pretty shapes but a bigger statement? Curator: Maybe a little bit of both. Art rarely whispers, and sometimes, the frame tells as much of the story as the painting, right? Editor: I hadn't really considered the social commentary angle. I'll definitely be looking at Art Nouveau differently from now on. Thanks! Curator: And I you, it is all a continuous un-framing isn't it!
