Michael Trekur made this watercolor of a glass bowl, we don't know when exactly, but some time between 1855 and 1995. Look how the blue seeps into the form of the bowl, like watercolor dyes spreading on damp paper. The artist is interested in transparency and reflection, how light dances on the surface. See how the subtle shifts in tone give the glass its volume. The way Trekur uses the paint is so direct, almost childlike, but don't be fooled. There's a real understanding of form at play here. I'm drawn to the drips and the little imperfections. They give the bowl a kind of wabi-sabi quality, celebrating the beauty of impermanence. It reminds me of some of Giorgio Morandi's still life paintings, where humble objects are elevated through careful observation and quiet contemplation. Art is just an ongoing conversation.
