Curatorial notes
This photograph of an Italian sculpture was created by the Centennial Photographic Company around 1876. Immediately, the contrast between the stark white statue and the dark background commands attention. The artist uses the interplay of light and shadow to enhance the three-dimensionality of the figure. Structurally, the statue is grounded by a circular base, which gives way to a cascade of floral motifs. This base supports the idealized human form of a young woman, draped in classical garb. What’s particularly striking is how the artist uses the conventions of classical sculpture but destabilizes them by obscuring the figure’s eyes. This disruption might challenge fixed notions of beauty and perfection, asking us to reconsider established artistic values. Consider, too, how the formal tension between light and dark, form and void, invites ongoing dialogue.
