Amedeo Modigliani made this drawing, "Les nymphes 2", with ink on paper. I am so drawn to the quickness of the lines in Modigliani's drawing. Can you imagine him, rapidly sketching the figure of a nymph, capturing the essence of her form with just a few strokes? The thinness of the ink allows for these elegant lines that dance across the page. There's a sense of immediacy, like he's trying to capture a fleeting moment or an impression. I wonder, was he thinking of Ingres or Cezanne? There is a raw honesty to the way he renders the figure – a sort of vulnerability. It reminds me of the importance of mark-making in my own work. Each line carries intention, emotion, and meaning. It's about being present in the act of creation. And through that, engaging in an intimate conversation with the viewer.
