Dirk Langendijk made this watercolor and pen drawing, titled "Battle Scene with Church at right," around the turn of the 19th century. The seemingly delicate combination of pen and watercolor is deceptive; its lightness belies the intense subject matter. Langendijk was a specialist in battle scenes, known for his meticulous attention to detail and accuracy. Notice how the artist's hand brings to life the chaos and movement of warfare through the layered applications of washes and the sharp lines of his pen. The smoke of gunfire, the frantic energy of the soldiers, the looming presence of the church – all are rendered with a remarkable economy of means. While the scene itself is obviously a depiction of conflict, the drawing also invites us to consider the labor involved in warfare itself. The artist gives detail to the muskets and cannons, but also reminds us of the human cost through the bodies strewn across the battlefield. By focusing on the materiality of both war and its representation, Langendijk challenges us to look beyond the heroic narratives, and to consider the full weight of human endeavor.
