Robert Frank snapped this photo, Boy Scout Camp--Sports, sometime in the mid-20th century. Look at the way the light falls, creating these soft shades of gray. The image feels like a memory, doesn’t it? Fleeting, but full. I’m drawn to the foreground, specifically the figure bent over with a cooking pot. The high contrast of their form against the snowy backdrop, draws my eye to the center of the scene. The texture is amazing – the way the light catches on the rough material of their uniform. And the light makes the whole image feel grainy, almost like it’s been lifted from a dream. Frank isn’t trying to hide the process; he’s letting the grit and the grain become part of the story. This piece reminds me a little of Walker Evans, especially in its dedication to portraying everyday life with such honesty. But Frank has his own, almost off-the-cuff approach. He challenges us to find beauty in the mundane. It's a testament to how art can capture the world, not as it is, but how it feels.
