Carel Nicolaas Storm van 's-Gravesande created this etching, “Braamstruiken in de duinen”, using ink on paper. Storm van 's-Gravesande was a Dutch artist who came of age during a time of significant social and political change in the Netherlands. As a member of the Hague School, he shared an interest in capturing the everyday lives and landscapes of the Dutch countryside. The naturalism of the Hague School can be seen in the muted tones and focus on the minute details of this piece. This image of brambles in the dunes can be interpreted as a commentary on the relationship between nature and culture. On the horizon, we see a silhouette of buildings and a windmill. Juxtaposed with the wild brambles in the foreground, this etching invites a contemplation of the tension between the natural world and the built environment.
