Editor: This is an untitled work by Donald Blumberg featuring the newly elected officers of the Amherst Garden Club. It's a black and white photograph. What strikes me is the formality of the group portrait. What are your thoughts on it? Curator: Well, let's consider the context of garden clubs, often spaces dominated by women in a specific social strata. The image, with its formal poses, silently speaks to gendered expectations and the performance of civic duty. How does the image either subvert or reinforce these social norms? Editor: I didn’t think of it that way. It seems to highlight the roles women played in their communities. Curator: Exactly, roles that were simultaneously vital and often overlooked by mainstream narratives. This image is a potent reminder of their contributions and a challenge for us to consider the complexities of visibility and power. Editor: I'll definitely look at such group portraits with a different perspective now.
