Whose stories aren’t being told in this seemingly peaceful depiction of Dutch life? Editor: I hadn't thought about it that way. It's easy to get lost in the pretty landscape. Curator: Precisely! Think about the rise of industrialization and urbanization during this period. Were there social inequalities being glossed over by focusing on idealized landscapes? Whose labor made the wealth of "herenhuis De Oorsprong" possible? These visual strategies were, in part, designed to evoke an orderly vision of life, obscuring social unrest. Editor: So the seemingly objective eye of the camera could actually reinforce existing power structures? Curator: Absolutely. By presenting this particular viewpoint, Van Wieldrecht subtly affirmed the status quo. Even something as simple as choosing where to point the lens is a political act.
