"Arrival of the Boats" (1884) by Jacob Maris depicts a group of figures gathered on a beach, watching as a fleet of fishing boats returns from sea. The painting, now in the Rijksmuseum, is a masterful example of Maris's signature style, characterized by a muted palette and atmospheric effects. The scene is dominated by a sense of quiet anticipation, with the figures and boats rendered in loose, painterly brushstrokes, creating a sense of movement and uncertainty in the choppy waters. The composition, with its focus on the receding horizon and the figures silhouetted against the cloudy sky, adds to the overall sense of drama and realism.

Waiting for the catch was a daily event on the beach at Scheveningen. Everyone in the village, young and old, came out to pilot the boats to shore, to haul them up onto the beach by horse, and to snap up the freshly caught fish. The format and composition that Maris chose for this painting draws us into the scene; we seem to be queueing up, as it were.
