Editor: This is a pencil sketch by John Flaxman, simply titled "[title not known]" housed at the Tate. It looks like studies of figures wrestling, or perhaps embracing? They are kind of floating on the page. What do you see in this piece? Curator: I feel the dynamism, don’t you? The flurry of lines capturing a fleeting moment of struggle, or perhaps you’re right, Editor, even tenderness. Flaxman was deeply inspired by classical forms; do these figures echo the epic battles of gods and heroes, or perhaps a more intimate, human drama? The ambiguity is part of its charm, I think. Editor: That is beautiful: "a fleeting moment of struggle, or even tenderness." I love that it could be both! Curator: Yes, it's a dance, isn't it? Art is a dance, always. And we get to interpret the steps.
