Johannes van Hiltrop created this print of a farm and mill in the Netherlands, sometime around the turn of the nineteenth century. It reflects a period when the Dutch Republic was being buffeted by outside forces and internal tensions. The image is not simply a neutral record. Even as Dutch power declined, the windmill remained a potent symbol of Dutch ingenuity and its mastery of the landscape. These structures were also central to the Dutch economy, used for everything from grinding grain to powering sawmills. This print’s idealization of rural life is consistent with a broader cultural trend in which artists and writers asserted the value of the Dutch landscape and its traditions, in the face of foreign influence and internal political divisions. As historians, we can analyze the image through the lens of Dutch cultural and economic history. We might also ask how the image was originally circulated and consumed, and how its meanings have changed over time.
