Katsushika Hokusai created this print of Enoshima in the Sagami province, with ink and color on paper. The dominant symbol here is Mount Fuji, a sacred mountain in Japanese culture, often associated with spiritual power, good fortune, and the divine. Fuji’s prominence is not unique to Hokusai. In fact, mountains across cultures, from the biblical Mount Sinai to the Greek Mount Olympus, represent a connection between earth and the heavens. This archetype transcends time, appearing in art from ancient Chinese landscape paintings to the Romantic landscapes of Caspar David Friedrich. In each iteration, the mountain evokes a sense of awe, perhaps tapping into our collective subconscious, reminding us of nature's sublime power. It speaks to the emotional desire to seek higher meaning, a universal human experience rendered through art. The mountain is a symbol that perpetually resurfaces, each time filtered through a new cultural lens, yet forever echoing our primal fascination with the monumental.
